Greetings from the Mayor of Toyako Town
Our town is located in the southwest area of central Hokkaido. We have good access from the prefecture’s larger cities, and are located about two hours by car from the Sapporo area as well as from Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport. Because of our town’s Abuta-Toyako junction exit from the freeway, intersecting Route 230 to Sapporo, and the coastline-running Route 37, Toyako Town is a convenient getaway by car. Additionally, the presence of the JR Toya Station also makes for a quick and comfortable trip by train.
One of the greatest features of our town is its beautiful nature and the scenery. Blessed with a bountiful land, we are surrounded by both a beautiful lake and breathtaking ocean. As a part of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, we also maintain active volcanic areas. Because of Mt. Usu and Lake Toya, our town is nationally well-known for its hot springs. The southern part of Toyako Town faces Uchiura Bay or, “Volcano Bay.” This quiet marine area supplies our town with an abundance of fresh seafood.
Not only famous for our fishing industry, we also provide various agricultural products. The temperate weather and rich land enables us to grow many kinds of delicious fruits and vegetables. Because of this ideal location and geography, we only expect these industries to grow in the future.
Many people around the world visit us every year and in 2008 the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit was held in our very town. A year later, the “Toya-Usu Global Geopark” was registered as the first Global Geopark in Japan.
